Limerick Hosts "Cancer in The Fire Service" Seminar

March 8, 2018

On March 8, 2018 Limerick Fire Company hosted local fire companies that were invited to listen to a seminar with Peter Berger, Education Coordinator for the Firefighter Cancer Foundation. His presentation reviewed the latest research in the battle against fire service carcinogen exposure on the fire ground and around the station, while explaining some new technology, new PPE, updated overhaul procedures and more.

“Cancer in the fire service is increasing every year. We lose more firefighters to cancer than cardiac related diseases. It is time to take a stand to make a change.” Through research, they have determined that if we correct our issues today, an opportunity exists to extinguish cancer.

He presented a similar, well received presentation at the NFPA Health and Wellness Expo in Boston in April of 2017.

Peter is from Hallendale Beach, Florida and is a 13 year veteran of the fire service, where he is a Fire Captain/Paramedic.
